A brotherhood is an organization that formed the basis of human ties in medieval European cities, and while some believe that its history dates back to banquets associated with religious sacrifices in the Old Germanic period, it usually refers to an organization that was established within a medieval city. Brotherhoods, also called guilds in northern Germany and Zeche in Austria, were organizations that were created for the purpose of participating in religious events and festivals to ensure salvation in the afterlife, banquets to enjoy earthly pleasures, and mutual assistance among members.
