Frenzy - Frenzy

Japanese:
Frenzy - Frenzy

It is a type of Noh and Kabuki dance that is classified as the fourth type of Noh, and is also called "Monogurui Noh." The main character is a "madman," that is, a person who becomes so lost in thought that he or she loses balance, becomes temporarily excited, and dances around in a playful manner. Examples of madmen include "Hyakuman," "Miidera," and "Sumida River," which are about mothers searching for their children, "Hanjo" and "Hanagatami," which are about young women searching for their lovers, "Semimaru," which is about a person who has suffered misfortune, and "Sotoba Komachi," which is about a woman possessed by the spirit of the dead. Examples of madmen include "Kouya Monogurui," "Tsuchiguruma," and "Yoroboshi," which are about men who are mad, and "Hibariyama" and "Ashikari," which are examples of madmen being performed as street vendors.

In Kabuki dance, they are generally close to true madness, and their unrestrained movements create a theatrical effect. Female-centered pieces include "Shizuhataobi," "Kuramajishi," "Omitsu Kyoran," "Onatsu Kyoran," and "Sumidagawa," while male-centered pieces include "Wankyu" and "Yasuna," as well as "Nakazo Kyoran" and "Danjuro Kyoran," in which the main character purposefully pretends to be insane for some reason. In terms of costume, many of these roles appear with their right shoulder bare and bamboo in their hands, influenced by the Noh play "Monogurui." Other distinctive features are that they often wear purple crepe headbands and, as in the case of the male madness play "Honame," long hakama are worn, and many of these require great skill to handle.
