...Industry included textile factories in Oita and Nakatsu, which moved in after the opening of the Nippō Main Line, a cement factory in Tsukumi that used local resources, a wood processing factory in Hita, and the Saganoseki smelter, which processed imported minerals. Textiles, which had been the leading industry until 1952, declined and only traces remained in Nakatsu and Oita. From the end of the 1950s, attention was drawn to the shallow coastline along the west bank of the Oita River and the downstream Oono River, and in 1961 the Oita-Tsurusaki coastal industrial area was developed, centering on heavy chemical industries. In 1972, Oita Airport, located at the mouth of the Oita River, was relocated to the southeast coast of the Kunisaki Peninsula, making it possible to use the site on a wider scale. The first phase of construction was completed, and major companies such as Nippon Steel, Kyushu Oil, and Showa Denko are now located here.
