…Belgian violinist, conductor, and composer. Also known as Ysaÿe. Devoted himself to the modernization of 19th-century violin playing, and pioneered 20th-century performance techniques. He studied under Bieniawski and then under Butan, and made his debut in Berlin in 1879. In 1883 he went to Paris, where he discovered C. Franck, Fauré, Debussy, and others, and devoted himself to introducing French music to the world. From 1886 to 1998 he was professor of violin at his alma mater, the Conservatoire de Brussels. During this time, in addition to performing solo in Europe and the United States, he organized a string quartet and an orchestra, and also worked as a chamber musician and conductor. …
