Niigata City is located in the central Niigata Prefecture, occupying the plains on the left bank of the Agano River. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The Ban'etsu West Line runs through the city center. In the early modern period, Gosenhira was known as a place for making hakama (Japanese traditional kimono), and in the Meiji period, it was known for its silk fabrics such as habutae and hiraro. After World War II, it developed as a textile city, mainly with factories for knitwear, and the city's shipment value of manufactured goods was 90.5 billion yen (2003). It has suffered frequent destructive fires caused by foehn, known as "shirodashi." In addition to rice, outdoor vegetables such as taro, flowers such as tulips, and kiwifruit are cultivated. There is a Higanzakura forest (a natural monument) in Oyamada. In January 2006, Muramatsu Town, Nakakanbara County, was incorporated. It has an area of ​​351.91 km2 . Population: 54,550 (2010).
