Kitakami Mountains Development Plan

…It is also called the Kitakami Mountains. It is a spindle-shaped mountain range that stretches from Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, through the eastern half of Iwate Prefecture, to the Oshika Peninsula in Miyagi Prefecture. It extends 240 km from north to south, and is 77 km wide at its widest point from east to west, with most of the mountains at an elevation of around 800 to 1000 m. The plateaus of Hiraniwa, Hayasaka, Toyama, Kuzakai, Taneyama (Monomiyama), Arakawa, Sadanori, and Kazuyama from the north are typical semi-plains that have long been used as pastures for the southern horses. The highest peak is Hayachineyama (1914 m) in the center, and Hiraniwa-dake, Orizume-dake, and Himegami-dake in the north, and Goyo-san and Murone-san in the south are remnants of hills that have survived erosion. …

…北上山地ともいう。北は青森県八戸市付近から岩手県の東半分を経て，宮城県牡鹿（おしか）半島におよぶ紡錘形の山地。南北延長240km，東西の最大幅77km余，標高は800～1000m前後のものが多い。北から平庭，早坂，外山，区界（くざかい），種山(物見山)，荒川，貞任，和山などの高原は代表的な準平原で，古くから南部馬の放牧地として利用されてきた。最高峰は中央部にある早池峰（はやちね）山(1914m)で，北部に平庭岳，折爪岳や姫神岳，南部に五葉山や室根山などがあり，これらは浸食に耐えて残った残丘である。…
