…Mendel's most important contribution was his accurate realization that opposing elements (today's alleles) control alleles, and that although children inherit one of these elements from each parent, they never fuse and, when the children produce gametes, they separate and enter separate gametes. Mendel's work was forgotten for a long time, but in 1900, H. de Vries of the Netherlands came to the same conclusion through his research on corn, while C. Correns of Germany and E. Tschermak of Austria came to the same conclusion through their research on peas, rediscovering Mendel's work. This year is usually considered the year when genetics was established. …
