A city in southwest Shiga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. It occupies the left bank of the downstream Yasu River and faces Lake Biwa. The city center was a former post station on the Nakasendo road, and is served by the Tokaido Main Line. It is a major rice-producing area, and vegetable and flower cultivation is also thriving. Freshwater pearls are cultivated on the lake shore. After the construction of Lake Biwa Bridge, many textile factories moved in, tourism and recreational facilities were built, and residential development is also progressing.
