lapides figurati (English spelling) lapidesfigurati

…The Muses are depicted holding objects, but these were not drawn by human hands, but by the natural grain of the gemstones that gave them these shapes. These are known as figural stones, and the question of why various shapes appear on the cut surface of the stone has been debated many times by 16th and 17th century naturalists, including J. Gaffarel and U. Aldrovandi. The entry for Horse Brain in the Wakan Sansai Zue also states that “among them, those with the shapes of humans, birds, or beasts are the most precious,” which shows that such rare stones have been known not only in Europe but also in Japan for a long time.
