Methods using ovarian steroid hormones have been around for a long time, and are still used today, but are becoming less common. The most widely used ovulation-inducing drug today is a nonsteroidal anti-estrogen, such as clomiphene citrate (brand name Clomid), which is taken orally for 5 to 10 days. Clomiphene binds to estrogen receptors at the hypothalamus and pituitary gland level, which triggers the release of a large amount of gonadotropins from the anterior pituitary gland around the 12th day after starting to take the drug, which is thought to cause ovulation. ...
