A city in central Niigata Prefecture facing the Sea of Japan. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. The central city, located in the Kashiwazaki Plain (Kariwa Plain), was a former post town on the Hokuriku Kaido highway, and prospered through the transport of gold from Sado and peddling of crepe cloth. From the mid-Meiji period until recently, Nishiyama oil fields were a major source of activity. In 1971, Kashiwazaki Port was opened as an international trade port, and in 1985, the first nuclear power plant began operation, and the Tajiri Industrial Park was completed. Machinery, metal, and glass industries are thriving. The Shinetsu Main Line runs through the city, and the Echigo Line branches off here. The Hokuriku Expressway runs through the city. The plains are a major producer of Kariwa rice. At the southwestern end is Yoneyama, famous for the folk song Sankaibushi, and in the south, where the Higashikubiki Hills spread out, is the scenic Jōkan-en Garden. In 1971, Kitajo Town, Kariwa County, was incorporated. In May 2005, Nishiyama Town, Kariwa County, and Takayanagi Town, Higashikubiki County, were incorporated. Area: 442.03 km2 .
