A city in western Bangladesh. It is the capital of Rajshahi state and the administrative seat of Rajshahi district. It is located about 70 km northwest of Kushtia, on the north bank of the Padma River, near the Indian border. In the early 18th century, the Dutch established a trading post here. During the British rule, it was called Rampurboara. It has long been a trading center for rice, jute, indigo (indigo dye), and other products. Today, industry is thriving, with agricultural product processing, lumbering, and match manufacturing plants, and silk supplied from nearby sericulture areas is famous as Rajshahi silk, which accounts for the majority of the country's production. It is home to the Sericulture Research Institute and Rajshahi University, which was established in 1953. Population: 299,671 (1991 estimate).
