In the mid-Muromachi period, the eighth shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, built a mountain villa in Higashiyama, Kyoto. After Yoshimasa's death, the villa was turned into a temple, which became Jisho-ji Temple. The Ginkakuji Temple is the Kannon Hall of Jisho-ji Temple, which was completed in 1489. The building combines a Buddhist hall and a shoin-style residence. The temple also contains Togu-do, Yoshimasa's personal Buddhist hall. The villa, along with its garden, is a good example of the Higashiyama culture. Source: Obunsha Japanese History Dictionary, Third Edition About Obunsha Japanese History Dictionary, Third Edition |
