A ligand that can bind to one metal atom simultaneously with two or more coordinating atoms is called a chelate, and a complex to which a chelate is coordinated is called a chelate complex. Chelate complexes are thermodynamically more stable than complexes bound to the corresponding monodentate ligand (chelate effect). They are used in chelate titrations, solvent extraction, etc. Source: Morikita Publishing "Chemical Dictionary (2nd Edition)" Information about the Chemical Dictionary 2nd Edition |
