A Kabuki theater in Edo. It was founded by Kawarazaki Gonnosuke I, who was a Noh performer. It is said that it first began performing in 1648 (Keian 1) or 1656 (Meireki 2). Around 1668 (Kanbun 8), the ownership of the theater was handed over to the second Gonnosuke, who later became a co-owner of the Morita-za (later Morita-za), but little is known about the events that took place thereafter until it opened as a reserve tower for the Morita-za in 1735 (Kyoho 20). It performed there for about 60 years until the end of the Edo period. The periods during which the tower was raised were 1735-44 (Kyoho 20-Enkyo 1), 1790-97 (Kansei 2-9), 1800-08 (Kansei 12-Bunka 5), 1815-17 (Bunka 12-14), 1819-22 (Bunsei 2-5), 1823-33 (Bunsei 6-Tenpo 4), and 1837-55 (Tenpo 8-Ansei 2).
