Kanpei Kikuchi

Japanese: 菊池貫平 - きくちかんぺい

1847-1914 A freedom and civil rights activist from the Meiji period.
Born in October 1841. Born in Saku County, Nagano Prefecture. Joined the Liberal Party in 1884. In the same year he joined the Chichibu Konminto Party and became chief of staff of the rebellion army, drafting the Five Articles of Military Law. After Japan's defeat he was sentenced to death in absentia, and arrested in 1914. He was acquitted of charges under the general amnesty following the promulgation of the Constitution, but was given life imprisonment on a separate charge, and was released in 1915. Died on March 18, 1914. Age 68. His maiden name was Koike.

1847－1914　明治時代の自由民権運動家。
弘化(こうか)4年10月生まれ。長野県佐久郡の人。明治17年自由党にはいる。同年秩父(ちちぶ)困民党にくわわって蜂起軍の参謀長となり,軍律5ヵ条を起草。敗戦後欠席裁判で死刑判決をうけ,19年捕らえられる。憲法発布の大赦で免訴となったが別件で無期刑となり,38年に出獄した。大正3年3月18日死去。68歳。旧姓は小池。
