Amano Todayu

...A haiku poet from the early Edo period. His family name was Amano, and his nickname was Todayu. His other names included Taihakudo. He was from Iga. He is thought to have been related to Basho. In 1691 (Genroku 4), he followed Basho eastward and settled in Edo, where he established himself as a haiku poet. In 1696, on the third anniversary of Basho's death, he retraced the steps of "Oku no Hosomichi" and composed "Mutsu-dori" (The Warbling Bullfinch), and on the 17th anniversary, he composed "Awazuhara." His tradition flourished for generations as Taihakudo. "The sparrows wake up to the sound of the nightingale" (from "Charcoal Bags"). [Sakurai Takejiro]...
