Kikyogahara - Kikyogahara

It is a plateau that stretches from the north to the west of Shiojiri City in Nagano Prefecture. The western edge is bounded by the deep eroded valley of the Narai River, and the east and north are also bounded by shallow valleys and volcanic ash soil. The area was the site of several battles in the Middle Ages (the battle between Prince Munenaga and Ogasawara Nagamoto) and at the end of the Sengoku period, but no historical remains remain. Due to lack of water, it was wilderness until the early Meiji period, but it was settled in the 1930s and is now the largest vineyard in the prefecture. Some of the farmers who grow it also produce wine, and in early autumn the farms are bustling with tourists from the Chukyo region, who visit the tourist farms in large numbers.

長野県塩尻市(しおじりし)街の北方から西方に展開する台地。西縁は奈良井(ならい)川の深い侵食谷で限られるほか、東、北も浅い谷などで限られた火山灰土壌からなる。中世（宗良親王(むねながしんのう)と小笠原長基(おがさわらながもと)との合戦）や戦国末期に数度の戦場となったが、それらの古跡はない。乏水地のため明治初年まで原野であったが、昭和10年代に入植し、現在は県下第一のブドウ園地。栽培農家のなかにワイン生産を兼ねるものもあり、初秋は中京方面からも観光客が多数観光農園を訪れにぎわう。
