…Caves 13-29 and the more than 20 unnumbered caves on the hill belong to Hinduism. The main ones were excavated in the 7th-9th centuries, while the smaller ones were excavated even later. The Kailasanatha Temple, the central one, is a rock-cut temple from the height of the Rashtrakuta period (8th-9th century) modeled after the Virūpākṣa Temple in Pattadakal. It has been carved into the rock mountain over 45m wide and 85m deep, and features a tower gate, Nandi cow hall, front hall, and main hall (about 30m high). It also has corridors and auxiliary caves carved into the surrounding rock walls, making it unparalleled in terms of both size and the quality of its carvings (Fig. 2).
