Tona - Tona

Japanese: 頓阿 - とんあ
Tona - Tona
[Born] Shoō 2 (1289)
[Died] 1 in the text = Ōan 5 (1372). March 13. A monk and poet during the Nanboku-cho period in Kyoto. Secular name: Sadamune. His father was Nikaido Mitsusada. He became a monk around the age of 20 and studied at Mount Hiei, and later frequented the Kinren-ji Temple at Shijo Dojo. He once lived at Higashiyama Sorin-ji Temple, but in his later years lived at Saikéen in Rakusai. He was a disciple of Nijō Tameyo and one of the four great masters of waka poetry. He participated in the "Dairi Senshu Uta" (1335), "Koyasan Kongo Sammai-in Dedicated Waka" (1344), "Shin Tamatsushima Uta-awase" (1367), and many other poetry gatherings and poetry contests. The imperial anthology Shinshui Wakashu was compiled midway through by Nijō Tameaki, who died, so Ton'a took over and completed the work. 44 of his poems were included in the imperial anthologies Zoku Senzaishū and later. In addition to the private anthologies Soanshū, Zoku Soanshū (66?), and Ton'a Hoshi'ei (57), several other hundred poems have been preserved. There is also the waka text Igaeshō (6 volumes, 60-63). Gumon Kenchū is a record of Ton'a's answers to questions from Nijō Yoshimoto.
