The rate at which temperature changes with altitude. This rate is called the lapse rate, since temperature decreases with altitude up to an altitude of approximately 10 km. The temperature in the atmospheric boundary layer from the earth's surface to an altitude of about 1 km is directly affected by the earth's surface temperature, so the lapse rate changes between day and night. Also, on a clear daytime day, it is close to the dry adiabatic lapse rate (about 1°C per 100 m difference in altitude). The lapse rate above that is 0.6 to 0.7°C per 100 m up to the tropopause, at which point it becomes an isothermal layer (a layer where the temperature is constant regardless of altitude), and in the stratosphere, the temperature increases with altitude.
