A city in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia, western Germany. Located at the northern foot of the Teutoburg Wald hills, the old town was founded around 1214 and obtained city rights. The new town developed from a religious settlement around Marien Cathedral at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century, it became a Hanseatic city. It reached its peak in the 16th century as a center of linen production. In 1851, the first modern weaving factory in Germany was established. Today, the city still produces silk and velvet textiles, as well as food, sewing machines, bicycles, tools, and medicines. In addition to Sparrenburg Castle (1250, rebuilt after damage in 1877), there are many cultural facilities such as a concert hall, a theater, a playing card museum, an art museum, and a university (founded in 1966). Population: 323,084 (2010). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
