...The term refers to the overall power with which a nation utilizes and controls the ocean, including elements other than military power. It was first used by American naval strategist AT Mahan in The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660-1783 (1890). Mahan analyzed history and argued that the prosperity of nations facing the ocean was brought about by three linked elements: the production of goods, shipping, and colonies, and that naval power exists to protect commerce.
