Izumi [city] - Izumi
A city in northwest Kagoshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It faces the Yatsushiro Sea to the west, the Izumi Plain including reclaimed land, and mountainous areas to the east. The city has developed around Izumi, a castle town at the foot of the mountain, and the port town of Yonotsu. The city is served by the Kyushu Shinkansen, Hisatsu Orange Railway, and National Route 3. The city mainly produces rice and mandarin oranges, and is home to electrical appliance and alcohol factories. It is also known for its shochu (Japanese prawns), kuruma shrimp, nori seaweed, and fruit seedlings. It also raises livestock. It is home to the Izumi shell mounds from the Jomon period, a migratory crane site (a special natural monument), the Yukawauchi and Shirakikawauchi hot springs, and the Crane Museum, which opened in 1995. In March 2006, it incorporated the towns of Takaono and Noda in Izumi County. It has an area of ​​329.98 km2 . It has a population of 55,621 (2010).
