A dye that changes color when it comes into contact with acid due to the action of heat or pressure. The dye itself is not heat- or pressure-sensitive. It is used in pressure-sensitive copying paper and thermal recording paper, but the dyes are almost the same for both, and typical dyes used are triphenylmethane-phthalide (crystal violet lactone, abbreviated CVL), fluoran, and phenothiazine. These dyes are usually colorless or slightly colored, but when they come into contact with solid acids such as acid clay, phenolic resin, or bisphenol A, they change color to a practical high concentration, and the color has light resistance, sublimation resistance, and solvent resistance that make it fully suitable for copying and recording paper.
