Song of Songs

A book in the Old Testament. Its original Hebrew title is "Song of Songs," meaning the best song. It is attributed to King Solomon, but since Solomon's name appears many times in the text (chapters 1, 3, and 8), it is clear that he did not write it. There is a theory that the Song of Songs was originally a dramatic work depicting love between a man and a woman, as it alternates between songs in which men and women praise each other's beauty. However, it is difficult to trace the consistent plot of the work as a drama. It is more appropriate to consider it a collection of songs sung and exchanged at wedding celebrations in ancient Israel. The origin of the Song of Songs is unclear, but similarities to Egyptian love poetry have been pointed out, and it is not impossible to imagine it being written during the time of King Solomon, when Egyptian influence was strong.

『旧約聖書』のなかの一書。ヘブライ語の原題は「歌の中の歌」で、もっとも優れた歌の意。ソロモン王の作に帰せられているが、ソロモンの名が本文中に何度も出てくるのをみると（1、3、8章）、かえってソロモンの作でないことは明らかである。雅歌には、男女がお互いに相手の美しさをたたえる歌が交互にみられるので、元来男女の愛を描いた戯曲的な作品であるという説もある。しかし、戯曲としての一貫した筋をたどることは困難である。むしろ古代イスラエルにおける結婚式の祝いの場で、さまざまに歌い交わされた歌を集めたとみるのが妥当であろう。雅歌の起源については明らかではないが、エジプトの恋愛詩などとの類似も指摘され、エジプトの影響が強かったソロモン王時代を考えることも不可能ではない。
