An underground stem that stores nutrients such as starch and swells into a spherical, egg-shaped, or elliptical shape. It grows underground in plants such as taro and gladiolus, and survives even when the above-ground parts die, becoming overwintering organs that germinate the following year for vegetative reproduction. It cannot be strictly distinguished from a tuber, but it generally has characteristics such as a vertical axis and germination only from the tip. On the other hand, it is similar to a bulb, and both are called bulbs in horticulture, but bulbs have fleshy leaves while corms have swollen stems.
