Wǔ bèi zhì (English spelling)

Japanese: 武備志 - ぶびし（英語表記）Wǔ bèi zhì

A military book from the Ming Dynasty in China, written by Mao Yuanyi. 240 volumes. Published in 1621 (Tenkei 1). The author had an interest in military studies from a young age, and using over 2,000 different books as reference, he detailed the tactics of successive eras. In particular, the section describing the state of affairs during the Ming Dynasty is of the greatest historical value, making it an important document for the study of Ming Dynasty history. The book also includes battlefield diagrams and maps, of which the Navigational Chart of Zheng He is an important source for the study of the history of the South China Seas. In addition to the Tenkei edition, there is also a Japanese print edition published in 1664 (Kanbun 4). [Tani Mitsutaka]

中国，明代の兵書。茅元儀著。240巻。1621年(天啓1)に成る。著者は少時より兵家の学を好み，2000余種の書物を資料として歴代の戦術を詳述した。ことに明代の形勢を述べた部分は最も史料価値が高く，明代史研究の重要文献である。なお書中には戦陣図や地図をも収録しているが，中でも〈鄭和航海図〉は南海史研究の重要史料となっている。天啓刊本のほかに，1664年(寛文4)刊の和刻本がある。【谷光隆】
