Dunhuang Studies (English: Dunhuang Studies)

Japanese: 敦煌学 - とんこうがく(英語表記)Dūn huáng xué
Dunhuang Studies (English: Dunhuang Studies)
A discipline that studies ancient documents discovered in the Mogao Caves (Thousand Buddha Caves) in Dunhuang, China. It can also include the study of the murals and sculptures in the Thousand Buddha Caves. In 1900 (the 26th year of the Guangxu era), the Taoist priest Wang Yuanlu discovered a great number of ancient manuscripts, documents, and paintings sealed away in Cave 17. Although they attracted little interest at first, in 1907 Stein of the British expedition, and in 1908 Pelliot of France, each purchased large quantities and brought them back to their home countries, which drew the attention of academic circles around the world. In 1910, the Qing government had the remaining Chinese documents transported to Beijing, but subsequent visits by the Otani Expedition, the Russian Oldenburg, and Stein on the third expedition all acquired several more pieces.
