The disease progresses slowly, beginning with loss of appetite, nausea, and diarrhea, followed by symptoms such as ascites, jaundice, and swelling. Urine volume decreases and congestion occurs in the stomach and intestines, digestive function is impaired, nutrition is severely impaired, and ultimately death occurs. Cirrhosis of the liver.

〘名〙肝臓の細胞が破壊され、これにかわって結合組織が増殖するために、肝臓が硬化する疾患。アルコール飲料、栄養の欠陥、寄生虫などが原因となる。経過は緩慢で、食欲不振、悪心、下痢などで始まり、腹水、黄疸、むくみなどの症状が続く。尿量は減り胃腸に鬱血(うっけつ)がおこり、消化作用がそこなわれ、栄養も著しく衰えて、ついには死亡する。肝硬変。
