Kangakkai - Thinking

During the Heian period, students and writers held religious ceremonies together with the monks of Mount Hiei. Twice a year, in spring and autumn, 20 monks and laypeople gathered to lecture on the Lotus Sutra, pray to Amida, and compose poetry in praise of Buddha. The ceremonies were started in 964 (Kōan 1) by Yoshishige Yasutane and others, and continued until 1122 (Kōan 3), with repeated interruptions and changes in nature to more retrospective forms. Influenced by the growing popularity of Pure Land Buddhism, and guided by the literary views of Bai Juyi, whom they revered, the students and writers sought to find harmony between literature and Buddhism, becoming pioneers in the acceptance of Pure Land Buddhism by the aristocracy and leading to the flourishing of Buddhist poetry.

平安時代、学生(がくしょう)・文人が叡山(えいざん)の僧侶(そうりょ)とともに行った法会(ほうえ)。春秋の2回、僧俗20人ずつが集まり、法華経(ほけきょう)を講じ、弥陀(みだ)を念じ、讃仏(さんぶつ)の詩をつくるというもので、964年（康保1）、慶滋保胤(よししげのやすたね)らが始め、中絶を繰り返し、回顧的なものに性格を変えながら、1122年（保安3）まで続けられた。学生・文人らは、盛んとなりつつあった浄土教の影響を受け、崇拝する白楽天(はくらくてん)の文学観に導かれながら、文学と仏道の調和をみいだそうとしたものであり、貴族の浄土教受容の先駆けとなり、釈教(しゃっきょう)の詩歌を隆盛に導いた。
