Wang Ji

Wang Ji
[Born] Kaioh 5 (585)
[Died] Jogan 18 (644)
A Chinese poet and hermit from the late Sui and early Tang dynasties. He was from Longmen, Jiangzhou (west of Hejin, Shanxi Province). His pen name was Wugong. His pen name was Donggaozi. He was the younger brother of the Confucian scholar Wang Tong (Wen Zhongzi). He passed the imperial examination during the Daye period of the Sui dynasty and became a secretary-general, but he hated being in the imperial court and became a magistrate in Liuhe County, Yangzhou. However, he drank too much and did not do his work, and when the world became chaotic at the end of the Sui dynasty, he quickly returned to his hometown. At the beginning of the Tang dynasty, he was called back to work, and was given a post as a disciple and a minister because he could drink three sho of sake a day. He was eventually given one tou of sake in particular, so he was called the "Scholar of Dou Wine." He eventually resigned from this position and sought out the services of Jiao Ge, the history officer of the Taile Office, who was a master of wine brewing. When Ge died, he retired to the Yellow River and spent the rest of his life with wine and the calligraphy of the Laozi and Zhuangzi. He admired Tao Yuanming and Ruan Ji, and wrote many poems about wine that incorporated their philosophy, as well as poems about rural life.
