…The group toured Japan, bought many books, and returned to Stockholm, Sweden in 1880. In the same year, American George Washington De Long (1844-81) set out on the ship Jeannette from the Bering Strait to the west across the East Siberian Sea, but the ship drifted with the ice and was destroyed by ice pressure near the New Siberian Islands at 75° north and 140° east latitude. Two men who made the journey on the ice survived, and the remains of the ship were discovered on the coast of Greenland in 1884. …
