In the same year, American George Washington De Long (1844-81) set out on the ship Jeannette from the Bering Strait to the west across the East Siberian Sea, but the ship drifted with the ice and was destroyed by ice pressure near the New Siberian Islands at 75° north and 140° east latitude.
