A musical instrument manufacturer. Established as Kawai Musical Instruments Research Institute in 1927, it began manufacturing and selling pianos. In 1928, it completed its first grand piano. In 1929, it changed its name to Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co., Ltd. It began manufacturing organs in 1930 and harmonicas in 1934. In 1935, it reorganized as Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co., Ltd., a partnership. Immediately after World War II, it built a new factory and resumed harmonica manufacturing. In 1951, it was reorganized as a joint-stock company and established as the current company. In 1960, it began manufacturing electronic organs. The following year, in 1961, it opened a piano tuning technician training school (later the Kawai Music Academy). In 1963, it established a local subsidiary, Kawai America Corporation, in Los Angeles for export to the United States. In 1985, it began manufacturing electronic pianos. In 2017, it founded the Shigeru Kawai International Piano Competition and held the first one. In addition to manufacturing musical instruments, mainly pianos, the company also operates music schools and sells office automation equipment and fitness equipment. It supplies Boston Piano on an OEM basis.

楽器メーカー。1927年河合楽器研究所として発足し，ピアノの製造・販売を開始。1928年グランドピアノ第1号を完成。1929年河合楽器製作所と改称。1930年オルガン，1934年ハーモニカの製造を開始。1935年改組して合名会社河合楽器製作所となる。第2次世界大戦後ただちに新工場を建設，ハーモニカの製造を再開。1951年株式会社に改組し現社設立。1960年電子オルガンの製造を開始。翌 1961年ピアノ調律技術者養成所（のちのカワイ音楽学園）を開校。1963年アメリカ合衆国向け輸出のため，現地法人カワイアメリカコーポレーションをロサンゼルスに設立。1985年電子ピアノの製造を開始。2017年 Shigeru Kawai国際ピアノコンクールを創設し，第1回を開催。ピアノ中心の楽器類製造のほか，音楽教室経営や OA機器，健康器具販売なども営む。OEMでボストンピアノに供給。
