Caledonia (English spelling)

Japanese: カレドニア（英語表記）Caledonia

The name of the area in the north of Britain, outside the control of the ancient Roman Empire. It is roughly the area of present-day Scotland. It was inhabited by the Caledonians. The Romans invaded this area under the command of G. Agricola in 82, but withdrew by the time of the reign of Emperor Trajan (98-117). The next emperor, Hadrian, established the border with Roman Britain and built Hadrian's Wall. They later re-entered the area around 180-185 and built the Antonine Wall, but it did not last.

ブリテン島の北部，古代ローマの支配圏外の地域をさした地名。ほぼ今日のスコットランドにあたる。カレドニア人の居住地。ローマは 82年 G.アグリコラの指揮のもとにこの地域を攻略したが，トラヤヌス帝 (在位 98～117) の治世までに撤収し，次帝ハドリアヌスによってローマ領ブリタニアとの境界を定め，ハドリアヌス長城を築いた。その後 180～185年頃再進出しアントニヌス長城を築いたが永続しなかった。
