…Because the classification of these fossils is unclear, paleontology sometimes uses the term worms. In strata thought to date to the late Proterozoic in America and South Australia, tracks and burrows believed to be from annelids have been found, and in Cambrian strata in various places, jaws and scolecodonts have been found in Ordovician strata. The scolecodonts are microscopic, but in some cases, about 1,000 different varieties have been found in one square foot (about 0.028 m3) of strata. …
