Karakami Shell Mound

...The site was discovered around 1920, and the excavated mirrors and Han-style pottery were introduced. It is also called Karakami Shell Mound because of the shell layer. In 1977, the East Asian Archaeological Society investigated the site, and stone axes, iron harpoons, iron sickles, iron hacksacks, antler-shaped knives, and bronze arrowheads were excavated from the layer from the middle to late Yayoi period, and whalebone harpoons, iron arrowheads, iron hacksacks, antler-shaped knives, bronze arrowheads, and nearly complete Han-style pottery were excavated from the layer from the later period. Together with the Harunotsuji site, it has become known as a representative Yayoi period site showing the transition from stone tools to iron tools. ...

…遺跡は1920年ころ発見され，出土した鏡や漢式土器などが紹介された。貝層があることからカラカミ貝塚ともよばれることがある。52年には東亜考古学会が調査し，弥生時代中期後半の層から石斧，鉄銛，鉄鎌，鉄鉇（てつやりがんな），鹿角装刀子，銅鏃などが出土し，後期の層からも鯨骨製銛，鉄鏃，鉄鉇，鹿角装刀子，銅鏃や完形に近い漢式土器が出土して，原ノ辻（はるのつじ）遺跡と共に，石器から鉄器への転換を示す代表的な弥生時代遺跡として知られるようになった。…
