A former town in Hikawa County, eastern Shimane Prefecture. Occupying the low-lying wetlands of the Hii River on the west shore of Lake Shinji, the settlement stands out as a scattered settlement on a natural levee surrounded by Tsuiji pine trees. Rice is cultivated, and onions and cabbages are also produced. The Sanin Main Line and Sanin Expressway run through the town, and Izumo Airport is located in the east. Lake Shinji was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland in 2005. Incorporated into Izumo City in October 2011. 80.64 km2 . Population: 27,695 (2010). 島根県東部,簸川(ひかわ)郡の旧町。宍道(しんじ)湖西岸の斐伊(ひい)川低湿地を占め,集落は自然堤防上にあり築地(ついじ)松に囲まれた散居集落が目立つ。米作を行い,タマネギ,キャベツなども産する。山陰本線,山陰自動車が通じ,東部に出雲空港がある。2005年に宍道湖がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2011年10月出雲市へ編入。80.64km2。2万7695人(2010)。
