This insect belongs to the family Diptera, suborder Brachyceratoidea, group of flies, family Acanthidae. It is a small, dark fly with a body length of 4.4 mm and a wing length of 3.8 mm, but the segments of its forelegs are well developed, forming prey similar to that of a praying mantis. When viewed from the front, its head is an inverted triangle, similar to that of a praying mantis. Its forehead is wide and shiny. Its antennae are short, with three long branching antennal setae only on the back. The dorsal surface of its thorax, including the scutella, is finely wrinkled, with two pairs of vertical stripes made of gray powder. Its wings are transparent, and its anal vein is degenerate. The dorsal surface of its abdomen is covered in gray-brown powder, and each segment has circular stripes made of gray-white powder near both ends. Adults are found on plants near water. It is distributed in Hokkaido and Honshu, and is also widely found in Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America.

昆虫綱双翅(そうし)目短角亜目ハエ群ミギワバエ科に属する昆虫。体長4.4ミリメートル、翅長3.8ミリメートルの小形で黒っぽいハエであるが、前脚の各節はよく発達し、カマキリに似た捕獲肢(し)となっている。頭部も正面からみると倒三角形で、カマキリに似ている。前額(ぜんがく)は幅が広くて光沢がある。触角は短小で、触角刺毛は背方にだけ3本の長い分枝がある。胸部背面には小楯板(しょうじゅんばん)も含めて細かい皺(しわ)状の構造があり、灰色粉からなる2対の縦条が走る。はねは透明で、臀脈(でんみゃく)は退化している。腹部背面は灰褐色粉を装い、各節の両端寄りには灰白色粉からなる円紋がある。成虫は水辺の植物上で発見される。北海道および本州に分布するほか、アジア、ヨーロッパ、アフリカ、北アメリカに広く産する。
