A bull deity in Egyptian mythology. Hapi. Greek form of Hapi. Like other Egyptian bull deities, it was originally a god of fertility and was associated with the reproduction of birds and animals, but later became associated with Ptah and Osiris. Every movement of the bull was interpreted as an omen for the future. It was widely worshiped throughout Egypt, but was especially kept and worshiped in Memphis. A grand birth festival was held once a year when the Nile began to flood, and any bull that lived for more than 25 years was drowned by the priests and buried in the temple of Serapis. The bull was considered to be a divine cow, pitch black with a square white area on its forehead and an eagle-shaped mark and a beetle-like lump on its back.
