Fire heaven

Japanese: 火天 - かてん

(Translation of Agni) Buddhist term. A deity who protects Buddhism and was transferred to Buddhism from the fire god of Hindu mythology. In esoteric Buddhism, he is one of the Eight Heavenly Beings or the Twelve Heavenly Beings. In the Garbha Mandala, he is lined up in the southeastern corner of the Outer Vajra section. His body is red and his hair is white. He always appears in the form of an ascetic sage, sitting in the flames, and in his four hands he holds a triangular mudra, rosary , water bottle, and staff. (Agni の訳語) 仏語。インド神話の火神から仏教に転入した仏法擁護の神。密教では、八天、十二天などの一つ。胎蔵界曼荼羅では外金剛部東南隅に列する。体は赤色、髪は白色。常に苦行仙人の形をして火炎中に座し、四本の手に、三角印、数珠(じゅず)、水瓶、仙杖を持つ。智火で煩悩(ぼんのう)を焼き尽くすという。火光尊。火仙。火神。※今昔（1120頃か）三「此の犬は、汝が父兜調(とてう)が成たるには非ずや。彼(かの)兜調は火天(くゎてん)を祭て梵天を願ひしかども、犬の身と成て汝に養育せらるる也」〔大日経疏‐五〕
