Officials placed in each family court and each high court to conduct investigations and other activities necessary in handling family and juvenile cases.

In family cases, they investigate the facts necessary for family court adjudication and family mediation, utilizing specialized knowledge in medicine, psychology, sociology, economics, and other fields, such as the personalities, careers, living conditions, financial status, and family and other environments of the people involved in the case. They report the results to the judge verbally or in writing. They also liaise with child welfare institutions to adjust family environments (case work), and many courts also provide family counseling and recommendations for compliance. Those in charge of family cases are specifically called family affairs investigators.

At the High Court, it is responsible for the investigations necessary for the hearing of appeals in family court cases and appeals in cases of ancillary measures, etc.

In juvenile cases, they conduct the necessary investigations for the adjudication of juvenile protection cases, utilizing medical, psychological, pedagogical, sociological and other specialized knowledge on the behavior, career, qualities and environment of the juvenile, guardian or related parties, in particular the results of classifications conducted by juvenile classification homes. The results are reported in writing to the judge. Other duties include reporting the discovery of delinquent juveniles, custody and observation of juveniles, and executing accompaniment orders on juveniles or guardians. Those in charge of juvenile cases are specifically called juvenile investigators. All of the above officers follow the orders of the judge when carrying out their duties. Assistant family court investigators assist the investigators in their work.

家庭事件および少年事件の処理に必要な調査などのために各家庭裁判所および各高等裁判所に置かれる職員。

　家庭事件については、家事審判および家事調停のために必要な事実調査を、事件の関係人の性格、経歴、生活状況、財産状態および家庭その他の環境等について、医学、心理学、社会学、経済学その他の専門的知識を活用して行う。その結果は、口頭または書面で裁判官に報告する。このほか、児童福祉機関と連絡をとって家庭環境調整（ケース・ワーク）を行い、さらに、多くの裁判所では家事相談や履行勧告の事務を行っている。家庭事件を担当するものをとくに家事係調査官という。

　高等裁判所においては、家事審判に係る抗告審の審理および附帯処分等の裁判に係る控訴審の審理に必要な調査を掌る。

　少年事件については、少年保護事件の審判に必要な調査を、少年、保護者または関係人の行状、経歴、素質、環境等について、医学、心理学、教育学、社会学その他の専門的知識とくに少年鑑別所の鑑別の結果を活用して行う。その結果は書面で裁判官に報告する。このほか、非行少年の発見報告、少年の観護・観察、少年または保護者に対する同行状の執行などの職務を行う。少年事件を担当するものをとくに少年係調査官という。以上いずれも、職務を行う際は裁判官の命令に従う。調査官の事務を補助するものとして家庭裁判所調査官補がある。
