Ring-tailed coati

Japanese: アカハナグマ - あかはなぐま(英語表記)ring-tailed coati
Ring-tailed coati

It is a member of the Procyonidae family of the Carnivora order of the Mammalia class. It is found in South America, except for the central part of the continent and the Patagonia region. It lives in coastal plains to altitudes of 3,000 meters. Its body length is 55 cm, and its tail length is 45 cm. Its body is reddish brown, with a light color on the underside from the throat to the belly. Its tail is light brown with around eight black rings. It eats insects, fruit, and small animals such as mice. It breeds well in captivity, and there are many examples in Japan. It will eat anything, but it is fed apples, bananas, and other fruits, boiled potatoes, eggs, and meat. It matures at the age of two, and after a gestation period of two and a half months, it gives birth to two to seven young in a nest box. The eyes open 10 to 15 days after birth, and the young are weaned at about one and a half months. There have been cases of them surviving for more than 14 years.
