…Although the form and basic attributes of the genre were established by “The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes,” the word “picaro” had not yet been used in this novel. The first to use the word and to establish the genre was Mateo Aleman’s “The Life of Guzmán de Alfarache, the Villain” (Part 1, 1599, Part 2, 1604), and the apex of the genre was Quevedo’s “The Life of Don Pablos, the Storyteller” (1626). Other masterpieces that came out of this genre include “Justina, the Vixen” by López de Úbeda, “The Life of Marcos de Obregón, the Squire” by Vicente Espinel, and the anonymous “Estebanillo González,” but in the second half of the 17th century, the genre regressed into descriptions of manners and customs. …
