Fossil Nautilus - Kaseki oumugai

Japanese: 化石オウムガイ - かせきおうむがい
Fossil Nautilus - Kaseki oumugai

…Compared to the 3,500 or so fossil species, there are only four living species, the others being N. belauensis in the Palau Islands, N. macromphalus from New Caledonia to Fiji, and N. scrobiculata in New Guinea. [Takashi Okutani]
[Fossils and systematics]
The fossil nautiloids (subclass) Nautiloidea consist of approximately 75 families, 300 genera and 3,500 species, with the order Nautilida alone consisting of 24 families and 165 genera. They appeared in the early Paleozoic era and flourished in geological times to a degree that is incomparable to today. Unlike the Cenozoic and Mesozoic nautiloids (narrow sense), including present-day species, the Paleozoic nautiloids (broad sense) often had shells that were straight and cone-shaped, or slightly curved like the horns on an animal's head.
