The strait separates the Yucatan Peninsula in eastern Mexico from the island of Cuba, connecting the Gulf of Mexico with the Caribbean Sea. It is about 210 km wide and is bordered by Cape Catoche at the northeastern end of the Yucatan Peninsula and Cape San Antonio at the western end of Cuba. A tributary of the South Atlantic Equatorial Current flows into the Gulf of Mexico from the southeast through this strait, becoming the source of the Gulf Stream.
