Among the new kinship relationships established upon marriage, the husband's wife's parents and the wife's husband's parents are called shuuto and shuutome, but generally the term refers to the husband's parents from the bride's point of view. This is related to the fact that in traditional Japanese marriages, there were many cases in which the husband's family resided in the family's home. The establishment of kinship relationships with shuuto and shuutome is carried out through the sakazuki ceremony (sakazukigoto) held during the marriage ceremony. The sakazuki ceremony between the husband and bride's parents is often held when the husband moves into the marriage as a son-in-law, while the sakazuki ceremony between the bride and her husband's parents is the central event of the wedding ceremony.

婚姻を契機として新たに設定される親族関係のなかで，夫からみて妻の父母，妻からみて夫の父母をシュウト･シュウトメとよぶが，一般的には嫁からみて夫の父母を指すことが多い。このことは伝統的な日本の婚姻居住形態が最終的に夫方居住となる例が多かったことに関連している。シュウト･シュウトメとの親族関係の締結は，婚姻儀礼におけるサカズキ(盃事（さかずきごと）)を通じて行われる。夫と嫁の父母とのサカズキは夫の朝婿入りに際して行われることが多いが，嫁と夫の父母とのサカズキは祝言（しゆうげん）の中心的行事である。
