It is properly called Kashmiri and is spoken by approximately 2 to 3 million people living in the Kashmir region. It belongs to the Indo-Iranian language family and is one of the so-called Dardic languages, but many of its words are taken from Sanskrit. Also, due to the long period of Muslim rule, it has many loanwords from Persian and Arabic. It has a large number of vowels, and mātrā vowels, which act as umlauts, changing the sound of the preceding syllable. It is also characterized by its use of pronoun suffixes. The script is the Sharadā script, which is close to the Nagari script, and is suitable for transcribing vowels, but there is no type available, so Nagari or Arabic script is used for printing.

正しくはカーシミーリー語といい，カシミール地方に住むおよそ 200万～300万の人々に話されている言語。インド＝イラン語派に属し，いわゆるダルド諸語の一つであるが，単語の多くをサンスクリット語から取入れている。またイスラム教徒の支配が長かったため，ペルシア語やアラビア語からの借用語も多い。母音の数は多く，マートラー母音 mātrā vowelsと呼ばれる母音がその前の音節の音を変える，いわゆるウムラウトの働きをもつことが特徴。また，代名詞的接尾辞を用いる活用にも特徴がある。文字はナーガリー文字に近いシャーラダー文字が母音の転写に適しているが活字がなく，印刷にはナーガリー文字かアラビア文字を用いる。
