...The general assembly of parishioners is called the common vestry, and the church committee is called the select vestry. If the rector, who collects the tithes, is a religious corporation or other entity and is absent from the village, a priest called a vicar or incumbent may be appointed as a vicar for the pastoral care of the parishioners. The English parish was also a unit of local administration.
