…The first International Conference on Near Eastern Studies was held in Paris in 1873, and the Tokyo conference in 1983 was the 31st. However, at the 29th Paris conference in 1973, the name of the conference was changed to the International Conference for Asian and North African Humanities, as it was deemed inappropriate to refer to the Orient (East) as a European region. From the Hamburg conference in 1986, it was decided to rename the conference the International Conference for Asian and African Studies (the official Japanese translation has not yet been decided). …
